Just back from gracious Charleston, SC, where I had time to do a little writing.<\/em><\/p>\n

Female cardinal,
\nmohawk and unlikely beak
\ndeftly picks a seed.<\/p>\n

\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 ************<\/em><\/p>\n

Long shadows flee West.
\nThe Marsh blushes goldenly,
\nwarming to sun’s kiss.<\/p>\n

Not as black as they’re painted<\/em><\/p>\n

Serene black vultures
\nidly float in wide circles
\ncontemplatively.<\/p>\n

Smooth, effortless grace,
\ndefying reputation
\nunconcernedly.<\/p>\n

\nGlandore, February, basking in Winter sunshine…<\/em><\/p>\n

Bright, silent crescent
\naloof in hibernation.
\nCat-like, sun-soaking.<\/p>\n

I see the lapwings are back again, harbingers of Spring and new growth and longer days…<\/em><\/p>\n

Harbingers<\/p>\n

Lapwings bank and turn,
\ntheir trademark stop-start flight plan
\nand plaintive “pee-weet”,<\/p>\n

despite the chilled air,
\nproof, if proof were needed, that
\nSpring is on the way.<\/p>\n

Pied green-black and white,
\nsartorial elegance,
\na rakish top-knot,<\/p>\n

peripatetic,
\nexotic itinerants
\nfollowing the sun.<\/p>\n

We can’t hold them here,
\nwelcome, feed them, watch them go
\nand the days lengthen.<\/p>\n

Yesterday was the ancient festival of Imbolc, known more recently as St. Brigid’s Day. Traditionally, it is the start of Spring, the first Day of the new year, in effect. (see the WAS site for report on our poetry\/musical celebration.)Incidentally, this was\u00a0published The SHOp 17, Spring 2005<\/em><\/p>\n

Evening, St.Brigid\u2019s Day<\/p>\n

Water, breac-rippled,
\nheron glides on broad kite-wings,
\nsky, a rinsed-out blue.<\/p>\n

Indian-ink trees
\nframing a faded blue sky.
\nBlackbird silhouette.<\/p>\n

Tree-tops trembling,
\nquivering in the blast of
\nscolding blackbird hen.<\/p>\n

Crows are gathering.
\nIn the cold, blue evening
